Want to convert the club into a studio: Akshai Sarin
Composer-producer Akshai Sarin will invite the audience to be part of an impromptu recording.
Old timers, who like their music performed ‘live’ on stage, aren’t exactly thrilled with the current music scene, with electronic dance music (EDM) artistes or DJs having replaced bands at live music venues. But, it seems, all is not lost yet. At his upcoming gig in the city, composer-producer Akshai Sarin will bridge the gap between an electronica act and a live performance.
Unlike a regular DJ set — where a solo artiste mans the console — Sarin’s act will feature an entire band. “It is EDM, but it’ different from what other DJs do, because it will be live with instruments,” says Sarin. The band will comprise a mix of city and international talent that includes Sarin (keyboards, electronics and lead vocals), Temper Heart (vocals), Stuart da Costa (bass), DJ Eddy Good (electronics) and rapper Mc Zean.
During this set, Sarin will also invite people from the audience on to stage to record an impromptu track. “I want to convert the club into a recording studio. I’ll create a song from scratch that I can later share with people,” he says.Last Saturday, Sarin experimented with this novel concept at his gig in Bengaluru. “It was fun because the crowd didn’t expect it. I called four people on stage and asked them to use beer bottles, forks and knives as percussion instruments. Some of them said something into the microphone and I used the sounds of the individual vowels from their spoken words, in the song. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a great experience,” says Sarin, who recently released his new album, Connected, and will be performing tracks from it at the gig.
“I hope the audience is patient. I’m glad that Shiro (Worli) has been supportive. In India, we always look to the west for new sound, as far as DJs are concerned. It’s tough for us to accept a new concept coming from an Indian artiste. I am looking forward to engaging the audience and having an intimate gig,” he says.
