Channel [V]’s Concert for Change-cum-Launchpad finals is still continuing to make news, but for the wrong reasons this time. This season had two main judges – Vishal Dadlani and Bobby Talwar. While Talwar, a former member of the band Zero, also judged the Top 3 bands at the Concert for Change, Dadlani was conspicuous by his absence at the grand finale.
Everyone associated with the concert had different reasons to give for his absence. One of the band members, on conditions of anonymity, confides, “We were told that Vishal was out of the country for a recording. But imagine our surprise when he turned up at the after-party! I think he didn’t come because everyone was saying that Vishal would be biased towards Faridkot. ”
Another member from the same band has another version. “He didn’t turn up because Bappi Lahiri was performing at the finals. He wasn’t too happy that a non-rock band was singing on the same platform as three rock bands.”
The official version from Channel [V], but obviously, contradicts both versions. According to executive producer, Zulfia Warren, there was a scheduling conflict. “The concert was to happen two days earlier and he had confirmed his participation. Since the date changed, he couldn’t make it as he had an another commitment on the same day, ” she says.
But she insists that his absence had nothing to do with Lahiri performing. She continues, “And in any case, Launchpad and the Concert for Change are two different entities. They were happening on the same platform but there was no clash between them.”
Though Dadlani was unavailable for comment, a member of Launchpad’s production team shares another version – and vouches for its veracity.
He says, “Vishal wasn’t too happy that the Launchpad bands didn’t get a concert only to themselves. He had come on board only so that an independent act could get a major launch, which didn’t happen. In the concert, the bands got lost amidst the big acts, and that’s exactly what Vishal had been worried about.”
