Mohammad Rafi’s classic Yamla pagla deewana… is returning to the music scene after a make over of sorts. British group, RDB or Rhythm Dhol Bass, have remixed the song and plan to release their version later this month. "We are doing a house version of the song Yamla pagla deewana…’" says Manj, who along with Kuly and Surj makes RDB, confirming the news. "It will be released in the coming weeks."

Apart from that, RDB has also created another mix of the track, for the title song for an upcoming Bollywood film called Yamla Pagla Deewana. The group, who in the past has collaborated with Snoop Dogg for the title track of Singh Is Kinng, is currently in the city for the production of their song. "Working with Snoop Dog was a great experience. He can teach you a lot of different things," says Manj.

RDBOut of the box

Akshay Kumar, who starred in the film, was also part of the music making. "Akshay always wants to do things out of the box. He was one of the first to tell us what he wants. We always like working with people who feed off us, so that we can feed off them," says Manj, who refused to disclose any information of RDB’s other international collaborations.

When asked what got the group that specialises in bhangra, hip-hop and Garage music, into the industry in the first place, Manj says, "It started as an interest in DJing. We come from a musical background. My father sings in Gurudwaras. At the 18th birthday of one of the brothers, we reproduced and remixed a whole song." And they had their parents for all the encouragement they needed. "They were supportive, because they are from a musical background. Though they had concerns about drugs, which is understandable. Every family wants their kids to be doctors."

World performances
RDB that currently operates from Canada, has in the past even performed in Pakistan a couple of times. “Every time we go to Pakistan, whether it is Islamabad or Karachi, the crowds are amazing.

And every time, there have been not less than 10,000 people present. No matter what the politicians say, music is one thing that brings people together,” says Manj.

What next
The group is currently in the midst of releasing their next single with Blitz Krieg, “De chumma chumma… is a happy song. It’s Blitz Krieg’s song, who was in our previous album, so we decided to return the favour by being part of his song. I hope people enjoy it, as much as we enjoyed making it. It’s part of a compilation album called Punjabi Most Wanted and has got a line of stars including Juggy D,” asserts Manj.
