Although the fusion of hip-hop with bhangra isn’t a new trend, the title track, Yamla pagla deewana, which combines both these genres, is an entertaining listen. Sung very convincingly in Punjabi by Shankar Mahadevan and Sukhwinder Singh

Sung very convincingly in Punjabi by Shankar Mahadevan and Sukhwinder Singh, this is the kind of song you might end up dancing to, maybe at a wedding. There’s another version of it, sung by Toshi Sabri, but we preferred the first one. Changli hai changali hai by Mika Singh has the same celebratory mood and percussions of his earlier hit, Dhinka chika (Ready, 2011). The music sounds stale and the vocals get annoying halfway into the first verse itself.

Suit tera laal rang da, a bhangra duet by Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan, isn’t the kind of song you’ll remember. Although Sunidhi cracks the number with her vocal prowess, Sonu’s voice conspicuously lacks the earthiness that would’ve done the trick. Main taan aidaan hi nachna, by Diljit Dosanth, features, lo and behold, dubstep like bass wobbles.

It is punchy and Punjabi to the very core; the hook line, I will dance like this only, main aidaan hi nachna, has all the makings of an earworm. Both versions of the club song, Jat yamla pagla ho gaya, show no promise of having a shelf-life of more than a month. The album ends with a number called, Yamla pagla deewana 2 mash up, which is as predictable as one would imagine.

On the whole, the soundtrack lacks dynamism. All songs feature similar sounds, and the lyrics seem ignored by the composers. They’ve played it safe with the soundtrack, which is evident in the album.

Film: Yamla Pagla Deewana 2
Music: Sharib and Toshi Sabri
Lyrics: Kumaar
What we like: Title track and Main taan aidaan hi nachna
What we don’t like: Overdose of party numbers
