A Congress-affiliated councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) allegedly killed her daughter and herself on Thursday morning. The reason: Even a politically-empowered woman couldn’t resist her in-laws’ dowry demands.

Twenty-six-year-old Satyam Yadav — harassed allegedly by her in-laws for a Honda City car and Rs 10 lakh, among other things — married Pawan Yadav, a teacher in an MCD-run primary school in Nangloi village, two years ago.

The incident, a senior police officer said, came to light at around 8am when Satyam’s sister-in-law, Sangeeta, knocked on the door of the bedroom.

“Not getting any response, Sangeeta immediately informed the other family members, who broke open the door,” said the officer.

Satyam was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her second-floor bedroom, while her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Vanshika, was lying on the bed under the fan. Police — who suspect that Yadav might have chosen to end her life after strangling Vanshika — are waiting for the autopsy reports to come.

Satyam’s family members, however, registered a complaint against her in-laws at the Nangloi police station, alleging that they murdered her and her daughter for dowry.

Prashant, Satyam’s elder brother, said her in-laws had been harassing Satyam also for giving birth to a girl child. He said, “They killed my sister and niece so that Pawan could marry another girl and get a huge dowry.”

“Their demand started three-four months after the marriage as Pawan got a job in MCD. At the time of the marriage, we had given them R5 lakh — more than enough as Pawan was unemployed at that time,” Prashant, an NDMC school teacher, said.

A sub-divisional magistrate-level probe was ordered into the incident and statements of both Satyam’s family members and of her in-laws were recorded on Thursday afternoon.
