At least 35 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested and their four boats seized by the Sri Lankan Navy late on Sunday for allegedly violating the International Maritime Boundary line.

The latest arrests from Palk Strait have taken the number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan jails to 114 and 25 boats.

Pleading with the government to intervene, NJ Bose, secretary, Tamil Nadu Mechanised Boats and Fishermen Welfare Association, Ramanathapuram, said, "They were held around the Katchatheevu area, which has traditionally been used by Tamil fishermen, till India ceded the island to Sri Lanka."
