The police on Thursday arrested a 35-year-old man who they claim had allegedly raped an eight-year-old minor after abducting her from outside her Sangam Vihar house at knife-point four days ago.

Though the police refused to divulge the name of the accused, sources said he was known to the family and had earlier stayed at the house where the victim lived with her family in a rented room.

According to a source, the accused hails from Vihar and was presently staying at a rented accommodation some distance away. He was arrested on the basis of the physical description of the suspect given by the victim.

“We questioned several people in connection with the case. The needle of suspicion pointed towards the accused as his statements were contradictory and his physical description matched with that of the suspect,” said a police officer on the condition of anonymity.

Help pours in
Meanwhile, a day after Hindustan Times reported about the plight of the victim’s kin - who are facing discrimination from the society after the incident - several people on Thursday volunteered to come forward  to help them, financially or otherwise.

As many as 15 people, including a couple of foreign nationals, contacted Hindustan Times through emails and phone calls and sought details of the whereabouts of the victim’s family. While majority of them wished to chip in with cash, others said they wanted to provide food, clothes and other aides to them.
The eight-year-old victim had gone to buy sugar on Sunday evening when the accused allegedly abducted her at knife-point and raped her at an isolated place. “She was dumped near her house in a badly injured condition,” said a police officer.

After the incident, the victim and her family members were allegedly ostracized. While their landlord issued a notice to them to vacate the premises at the earliest, their neighbours slowly started distancing themselves. The victim’s father lost his job, while her brother was thrown out of the school he went to.
