Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital called off their strike on Wednesday afternoon after their demands were accepted in a prolonged meeting between doctors' representatives and the Union health ministry officials.

"We have given them a proposal for building a hostel on the campus and they have agreed to it. There is a plan for setting up a hostel for the resident doctors behind the undergraduate hostel. A proposal for setting up hostels in Dwarka and West Kidwai Nagar also came up during the meeting," said Dr Sameer Prabhakar, spokesperson, Resident Doctors Association.

The decision to demolish residential flats for doctors in West Kidwai Nagar has been put on hold till they find a permanent place to stay.

"It was also given in writing that the rest of our demands will be met immediately," said Dr Prabhakar.

"The grievances and demands of the doctors have been heard and we have agreed to most of them. We have considered multiple options for accommodation. We have a short-term plan of renting a few apartments in the vicinity, either from Delhi Development Authority (DDA) or other sources," said Dr BD Athani, medical superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital.

Meanwhile, a patient, who was admitted to the hospital early in the morning in a critical condition, died of cardiac failure in the afternoon.

"She was very sick and despite our best efforts, couldn't be saved," said a senior doctor in the department of cardiology.
