Over 200 passengers travelling with the national carrier had a harrowing experience on Saturday when they found their luggage missing after landing at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Not only this, the passengers were told to wait for their luggage for the next 24 hours. As many of these passengers were not based in Delhi, they were forced to wait at the airport for the whole day and even had to alter their next travel plan.
"After we got down at Delhi, the airline staff told us that the baggage couldn't be loaded in the same plane due to technical reasons. The airline's staff was very rude and the delay on their part has spoiled our plan completely. I had a Saturday night flight to Bangkok, which I had to cancel as the key of my house is in the bag. Who will pay for this damage?" said Natasha Singh, a travel agent based in Bangkok, who had gone to Dubai for some official work.
The Air India flight AI-996 was also delayed for three hours and landed at the Delhi airport around 7am.
"It was scheduled to leave at midnight but got delayed. Though the airline staff told us that it will take off at 1:45am, it finally took off at 3:30am. I had booked a business class ticket and got the lounge but I could see the economy class passengers sitting on the floor at Dubai airport," Singh added.
Sources said that most of the passengers on board had a connecting flight but all of them had to make changes in their plan because of baggage delay
An Air India spokesperson said that sometimes when the plane is full, the baggage containers have to be put on hold. "The baggage will now come with the next flight that will land on Sunday morning," the spokesperson said.
