Ahead of the Assembly elections in the city this year, the redevelopment of Chandni Chowk is once again back on the agenda of the Delhi government.

Keeping the north Delhi municipal corporation out of the ambit, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has entrusted the redevelopment work to the government's Public Works Department (PWD).

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also been asked to help with its expertise in making the lines underground without disturbing traffic in the localities.

After a delay of several years, the CM has set a deadline of one year for the work and has constituted a coordination group to overcome any obstacle in the way of implementing the project. "All agencies have been told to work in tandem to ensure completion within the stipulated time," said Dikshit.

The project includes various features such as street improvement, creating pedestrian-friendly environment with distinctive character of Chandni Chowk, integrated plan for all the services and creating heritage environment on the stretch of Chandni Chowk.

The project has been divided into two phases, wherein phase I would include putting all the services underground and phase II will take up the renewal project of Chandni Chowk.

All these decisions were taken in a meeting held on Monday chaired by Dikshit and attended by Union communication minister Kapil Sibal, principal secretary (Finance and Power), principal secretary (PWD), managing director of DMRC and chief executive officer of Delhi Jal Board.

"The project has been delayed due to multiplicity of authorities. But now that the PWD has been assigned the job, we will meet the deadline," said Kapil Sibal.
