Rain brings winter chill to Delhi
Crocodiles are set to return to the Capital after almost a century. Lieutenant-governor Tejinder Khanna has approved a plan to set up a crocodile park — the first of its kind in Delhi — on the banks of the Yamuna.
“We’ll have crocodiles in phase-II of Yamuna Biodiversity Park,” said CR Babu, professor emeritus in DU’s biology department.
Crocodiles found in the Yamuna before Independence were reportedly hunted by British soldiers till there were none left. Now, the government plans to relocate them from the Chambal in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The environment ministry will soon be approached for the project, which is part of an initiative to bring back Delhi’s native species.
