Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday warned that communal forces were out to divide the society and called upon the people to defeat them in the forthcoming polls.

“A few days back, there was communal violence in the country. From that we should take lessons that there should never be laxity in efforts to stop communal forces,” he said at a function organised in the national capital to present the Rajiv Gandhi Sadhbhavna award to sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

“Many times, the country’s diversity is exploited to create a divide among us. We have to oppose such communal forces all the time, at all levels, whether it is daily life or elections,” the PM added.

The remarks were widely interpreted to be directed at the BJP and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, in particular, who is viewed by Congress as a “divisive” figure.

In her speech, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said a divided society cannot progress with all its strength. She said her husband had realised that narrow mentality was dividing the society and had launched a series of Sadbhavana yatras just before his assassination.
