Annoyed over his divorced wife's second marriage, a 32-year-old man along with his four friends entered her home and resorted to indiscriminate firing in southeast Delhi's Meethapur village early on Tuesday morning.
While the father-in-law of the prime accused died on the spot, his former wife and four other members of her family have been critically injured after being attacked with sharp weapons and firearms, the police said.
The deceased, Om Prakash, reportedly sustained a bullet injury. His daughter Suman's condition is stated to be critical, a police officer said. The incident took place at around 1am when the victims were asleep in their home.
After attacking his former wife and in-laws, the prime accused, identified as Vikram, did not move from the crime spot even as his friends fled. Vikram was overpowered by neighbours who beat him up before handing him over to the police. He was badly injured and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
A preliminary investigation into the incident has revealed that Suman was married to Vikram in 2009 and they separated in 2011.
"Around one and a half year ago, Suman married another man on her family’s insistence. This was not acceptable to Vikram. He developed a grudge against Suman and her family members and was looking for an opportunity to take revenge," the police officer said.
Vikram planned the incident after he learnt that Suman has come to meet her family members at their house. He involved his four friends in the plan and they together attacked Suman and her family members. Suman's sister-in-law was the only member of the family who escaped unhurt. She is the sole eyewitness of the entire incident.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered at the Jaitpur police station against Vikram and his four friends. Efforts are on to nab his absconding associates, the officer added.
