To stop retailers from overcharging, the Delhi government has decided to inform people about the prices of onions and potatoes through SMS.
Though the wholesale prices of the kitchen staple are low, the retail prices quoted by sellers are higher than what the government has permitted.
The food and supplies department, in order to crack down on such unscrupulous sellers, will inform people about the rates everyday through text messages.
“We have received a number of complaints from people that vegetable sellers were charging more than official rates. We conducted a survey and found that there was a huge difference between the average rate and what was being charged from people. We have decided to send an official message to people about the rates. This will help them know if someone tries to overcharge,” said a senior Delhi government official.
So far, 16 lakh users have been registered with the food and supplies department under the food and security scheme.
According to Delhi government officials, other users can get their numbers registered with the department also.
“The text message will inform about the wholesale rates, retail rates, the rate at which onions and potatoes are being sold through the mobile vans of the Delhi government and the government offices. Rates of SAFAL outlets will also be provided. We will also provide average retail price of the vegetables,” added the official. The facility is expected to start within a few days.
