It’s inspired lofty literature and poetry, but now Delhi has caught the attention of city stores that offer you a slice of your city to keep in your home.
Products inspired by the local temperament, history, heritage and landmarks of the city are making an appearance at various stores in the city.
Says writer Sadia Dehlvi, “It’s a good sign. The city is developing a sense of belonging like New York or London, which has had a sense of pride for decades now.
Such trends indicate that the new generation is bonding with the culture, heritage, monuments and the local flavour in their own ways.”
From quirky coaster sets to pouches, from funky wallets to Rashtrapati Bhavan bags, from colourful Purani Dilli lamps to India Gate from DTC shirts to Connaught Place cushions, Delhi’s iconic images are serving as as a truly cultural melting pot.
Says Santosh Desai, CEO, Future Brands, “Delhi as a brand is coming into its own. People are taking it ahead. Now people have the emotional connect towards the city.”
Says Himanshu Dogra, owner Play Clan, a Delhi store that sells pop art insoured home decor: “Delhi as a culture inspires us.”
The store, which opened five years ago, has many items inspired by the city. “The products with the Delhi element are loved by people not only in Delhi but also in other cities as well, as Delhi is becoming a celebrated idea globally,” says Dogra. He adds: “People love connecting with their history and legacy.”
Delhiites are delighted at the new trend. The general sentiment being that while cities like London and New York always managed to build a brand with Big Ben or Statue of Liberty memorabilia, its great that Delhi’s monuments are getting popular too. Says 19 year old Nidhi Singh, “We have been seeing I love NY tees for a long time, now it’s Delhi’s turn.”
