After failing to convince her boyfriend for marriage, a post-graduate student of Delhi University attempted suicide by jumping off the balcony of her boyfriend's third-floor rented flat at west Delhi's Jwala Heri village on Monday.

The girl, a correspondence student, also works with a consultancy firm in northwest Delhi's Pitampura.

The incident was reported around 9.30am. The girl, a resident of Swaroop Nagar in northwest Delhi, suffered multiple injuries and was immediately rushed to Balaji Action hospital. Her condition was stated to be critical, as she has sustained severe head injuries.

Though her statement could not be recorded till late in the evening, police said Kajal was under depression since her boyfriend had been rejecting her marriage proposal for the past four years.

Police have picked up her boyfriend, identified as Pankaj, for questioning in connection with the incident. He hails from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh and works with a private company in Gurgaon. The two had met four years ago through a common friend and soon fell in love.

Pankaj told the police that he had been turning down the marriage proposal due to personal reasons. On Monday morning, an argument broke out between the couple. Pankaj left his room and went out in the middle of the discussion."A few minutes later, the woman jumped off the third floor. One of the neighbours rushed her to hospital while another neighbour called up the police control room," the police officer said.
