A senior citizen and a Congress party worker, was found murdered at her residence in Karawal Nagar in Northeast Delhi on Thursday evening.
Police said the lady, Santosh Sharma (62), was vice-president of the Mahila Congress Mandal and was registered with Delhi Police’s senior citizen cell.
On Thursday, a beat constable of the area had visited her earlier in the day.
They said Sharma stayed on the first floor of her house in Shiv Vihar.
The murder was discovered around 5:00 p.m. by a neighbour who had come to visit Sharma. The neighbour knocked on the door but no one responded. He then called the police who broke open the door and found Sharma’s body.
The police said that her face was gagged.
“There were strangulation marks on her neck and the house was ransacked. When we inquired around, we found that she was a very cautious lady and was never known to open her door to strangers. The entry to the house was friendly and we suspect that she was murdered by somebody known to her,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to talk to the media.
The police said there was Rs. 1 lakh at her house, which has been found missing. Her brother-in-laws, U.K. Sharma, who is settled in Singapore, and S.K. Sharma, a resident of Krishna Nagar, had visited her residence on August 20 to pay respects on her husband’s death anniversary.
They had left after giving her the cash. The police said that the jewelry she was wearing — rings, necklace, earrings and anklets — were also missing. According to the police, her earrings were pulled out forcibly and there were signs of injury on her ears. The almirah in the house was also broken.
