Four members of Azamgarh MP Ramakant Yadav’s family were killed on Wednesday when the SUV they were travelling in overturned on the Yamuna Expressway near Tappal. Four others were injured in the incident that took place late on Wednesday night.
10 people have died while 39 have been injured in various accidents in the last six days on the expressway.
According to the police, eight members of BJP MP Yadav’s family were travelling in a Toyota Fortuner car with the MP following them in another vehicle when the incident took place. The cars were on their way from Agra to Noida.
Police said the speeding Fortuner suddenly swerved towards the centre of the road when it was in Tappal area, around 55 km from Zero Point on Yamuna Expressway, and collided with the divider before turning turtle.
The victims were on their way from Mathura to Delhi after taking part in Janmashtami celebrations.According to Yamuna expressway officials, the driver of the SUV probably lost control of the vehicle and collided with the divider. The victims were immediately rushed to Kailash Hospital.
“Four people —Indrasen Yadav (35), Arvind Yadav (37), Shambu Yadav (36) and Sunil Gupta (33) — were brought dead to the hospital around 1.30am,” said Dr Sanil Kapoor, CMO, Kailash Hospital. “Rajeev Yadav (36), Hariram (38), Suresh Maurya (34) and Chotey Lal (30) were injured in the mishap and are being treated,” he added.
Indrasen, Arvind and Rajeev are nephews of Yadav.
“The accident happened due to the speeding. We sent the bodies for post-mortem. We informed the family members of Ramakant Yadav. We also in touch with Aligarh Police to carry out further legal proceedings as the spot comes under the jurisdiction of Tappal police station,” said Brijesh Kumar Singh, superintendent of police (Rural), Greater Noida.
Despite several efforts from developers and police, cases of accidents and deaths on the expressway has been on the rise in the last few months.
