First of DU’s undergraduate semester exams begin today

After bitter disputes between the teachers and Delhi university authorities, the first semester examination for 13 undergraduate science courses will begin from Tuesday and will continue till January 13.

Students on Monday said all their apprehensions regarding semester system have gone away. “With the new schedule, we got enough time to prepare for the examinations, I am quite confident about sitting for the examinations tomorrow,” said Nikita Gupta, first-year Physics (honours) student of Miranda House.

Prerita Agarwal, a first-year student of Botany (Honours) from Kirorimal College said: “The teachers managed to finished the course just in time. But our college did not follow semester system from the beginning. We would have liked a little more time to prepare.”

The opposition from the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) in implementing the semester system had forced the university to postpone the examinations twice. Initially, under the original academic calendar, the exams were scheduled to begin from November 20 and then it was postponed to December 6.

When the stalemate between DUTA and the university continued, the court intervened and upheld the implementation of the semester system.
Since the classes were disrupted due to frequent protests, the university drew out a new schedule so that the teachers and students can complete the syllabus.
