Four sharpshooters of notorious jailed extortionist Manoj Morkheri gang were arrested by a joint team of the Delhi police’s crime branch and Haryana’s Rohtak police after a brief encounter at Rohtak on Saturday morning.

A head constable of the Rohtak police, identified as Sandeep, sustained injuries during the gunfight and his condition is stated to be out of danger.

With their arrest, the police claimed that they have foiled the murder plan of a law aspirant who was supposed to appear for LLB exam at Maharshi Dayanand (MD) University Campus in Rohtak.

The arrested sharpshooters have been identified as Jagdeep, 30, Sandeep, 21, Anil Kumar, 24 and Raj Kamal, 26, all hailing from Rohtak. Three sophisticated pistols, a country made pistol and 18 live cartridges were recovered from their possession, said police.

Ravindra Yadav, additional CP (crime branch), said the arrests came following inputs received on Friday by their team that Morkheri gang is planning to execute the murder of one Praveen in the campus of MD University.

A trap was laid near the university and the gang members were arrested after a brief gunfight.

The gang, led by Manoj Morkheri, is involved in running extortion rackets in areas of outer Delhi and Haryana.

They target builders, property dealers and bookies operating in the area.  However, no one dares to lodge complaint against them out of fear of reprisal,  said Yadav.
