Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has asked the capital’s road-owning agencies to pull up their socks and repair the potholed streets of the city.

In a meeting on Saturday, Dikshit asked officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to make all roads under their jurisdiction smooth as per well-defined standards and chalk out an action plan by September end in view of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Dikshit said the phase-wise implementation of the plan would be monitored by the Chief Secretary and she would herself take rounds on different roads daily. She also conveyed her observations in respect of potholes and damages on roads to the concerned agencies. Dikshit has asked the agencies to fix responsibility of the concerned engineer in case of any lapse.

Senior engineers have been asked to personally inspect roads under their jurisdiction at regular intervals.  ‘A coordinated effort must be undertaken to uniformly make all roads smooth, longer lasting and worth motoring’ – a Delhi government statement said.

Dikshit stressed the need to give special focus on roads leading to the different sports venues during the Commonwealth Games.

PWD has 450 km of road length under its jurisdiction while MCD maintains 400 km. These agencies have been asked to work in coordination with the Metro  and the National Highways Authority of India.
