Goa Election Commissioner PM Borkar became the first election official on Saturday to declare his assets after India’s other election commissioners have declined to do so.

Pune-based financial consultant Vihar Durve had filed an application with the Election Commission, that made asset declaration for election candidates mandatory, in December 2008 seeking details of assets of three national election commissioners and state election commissioners and electoral officers. The Election Commission had forwarded the application to state governments.

Two months later, Borkar has declared his assets worth Rs 17 lakh, apart from his salary, in response. It also provided details of his assets in the name of his wife. “I have nothing to hide,” was Borkar’s reaction when contacted by HT on Saturday.
