The government, helmed in by the outpouring of grief after the gangrape victim’s death, is yet to specify where she will be cremated.
Sources maintained that the body of the woman might be flown to Varanasi and then taken to Ballia for her last rites. The BJP's Delhi unit has, however, said the event will be held at Dwarka in Delhi.
Police are fighting shy of the BJP's suggestion though. They fear that a cremation in Delhi will spark swirls of protest that could turn violent.
Vijendra Gupta, state BJP president, told reporters that he was in touch with the parents of the woman, who said that the cremation would take place in the Capital as the family had been living here for the past 25 years.
“If the cremation takes place here, I appeal to the people of Delhi to come and join the procession and pray for the peace of the woman,” Gupta said.
Gupta claimed that he visited the girl before she was shifted to Singapore for treatment, and said the news of her death came as a shock.
The BJP has requested traders to keep their shops closed on Sunday as a mark of mourning for the rape victim.
