An interview with Anurag Sachan Northern Railway's DRM (Delhi).
Q: Congestion is such an apparent problem at the station. What is being done about it?
We have decongested the station to an extent, improved its building and the overall premises. Flooring and fencing have been done. More work is in the pipeline.
Q: It's a nightmare for those driving to the station. There's chaos. You don't know where to park.
We're putting in place a new parking plan in two months. Passengers will have no reasons to complain once we are ready with the new parking arrangement.
Q: How can a station as big as this not have ramps for differently-abled people?
We have two ramps at the entry from Ajmeri Gate. Maybe most of the people don't know about it. However, they cannot be built at each platform. We're going to install elevators so that the differently-abled people should not be hassled.
Q: Foreigners complain it's very difficult to reach the tourist bureau because of the lack of proper signages and touts often trap them
That's been an area of concern. I have instructed the station authorities to prominently put up signages and make sure foreigners are not harassed.
Q: With such a huge daily footfall and being a vital installation, the station looks vulnerable on the security front.
We're doing our best. The sheer number of passengers -- five lakh a day — is a major challenge. We have installed 152 CCTV cameras and nine baggage scanners. For the safety of the passengers, marshals -- like the ones deployed at airports -- will be deputed at the station. We will add six sets (up and down) of escalators to the existing three.
Q: Passengers of premier trains don't have options for good food and comfortable stay.
We have soft-launched an executive lounge on the Ajmeri Gate side. We have also planned to open a multi-cuisine restaurant. At platform number 1, we have just opened a Chinese restaurant.
