With a baffled expression on their faces, the students of 10+2 are caught in the heat of admission. For those who are still clueless about what they want to do, Delhi University (DU) brings to them a large number of language courses. To name some there are courses like BA(Hons) French, BA(Hons) German and BA(Hons) Chinese.
Language courses from DU are one of the most upcoming courses with a promising career. Such courses can be done in two ways. Firstly, there is a three years course which is very much equal to any other undergraduate course from DU. Secondly, some selected colleges provide diploma courses in various languages that a student can take up while he is doing any other regular course like B.Com or BA (Hons) from DU. "Our college provides diploma course in Spanish" said Novy Kapadia, Reader in English, SGTB Khalsa College."Sky is the limit for these students" he adds.
These courses can be done from the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, North Campus, Department of East Asian Studies, North Campus and Department of Slavonic and Fenno-Ugrian Studies. The cut-offs for these courses are not too high (usually 50% and above) but there is an entrance exam to be passed. The fee for these courses ranges between Rs 2000-3500.
The faculty of the departments mentioned above help the students with placements. “Students taking up these courses can be recruited in embassies. Foreign companies these days need translators, so that is another option. They can also go in for content writing and public relations," said Prof S K Vij, Head of Department of Slavonic and Fenno-Ugrian Studies and Dean of Students' Welfare.
