If you are looking for an affordable house in Delhi, there might be some options available for you in east Delhi by next year.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) plans to develop Karkardooma as the capital's first transit-oriented development (TOD) corridor.
The area is expected to see some high-density mixed land use development soon.
Apart from commercial properties, there is also a component of affordable housing in the proposed project.
"There will be houses for all income groups, including low cost projects. There are plans to have about 20,000 housing units in the project," said a senior DDA official who didn't wish to be identified.
The TODs are an integral part of DDA's 2021 Master Plan for Delhi and Karkardooma is the pilot project. The DDA plans to allow to high rises to come up along the corridor.
The idea is to have high-density development focused around public transport corridors so that there is least dependence on personal transport.
"The area will be developed like a small township with different houses for different income groups, shopping complexes, school, hospital etc. The Karkardooma Metro station would be the main component of transport, apart from the proposed rapid rail system and Bus Rapid Transit," the official said.
The research and study on the pilot project is still being carried and is expected to be completed by next month.
Delhi's development in past few years has been on the ring and radial pattern with reliance on road-based public transport.
But under the transit-oriented development model, the commercial and residential complexes will come up within a walking distance of the mass rapid transit system (MRTS) network.
The new policy will ensure restructuring of the city and optimum utilisation of land along the MMRTS corridors.
DDA officials said the Karkardooma corridor would be within walking distance of at least three Delhi metro lines -- the existing Dwarka-Anand Vihar line, the Rithala-Dilshad Garden and the under-construction Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar.
