The three-member committee constituted to investigate the technical snag that hit Metro services on the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line on Tuesday morning may submit its report on Thursday.
The committee — consisting of executive director (safety), executive director (rolling stock) and general manager (operation) of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) — was formed immediately after a Metro train developed a snag and got stuck in underground section of the busy Gurgaon line, stalling the service for over one-and-half hours. There were more than 1,700 people in the train at that time.
“It seems like a stray incident that occurred due to failure in the software-based communication system that connects the coaches. We have communicated with the manufacturer (Bombardier) too and hope to complete the enquiry by Thursday,” said Vikas Kumar, general manager, GM (operations).
According to Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the communication between coaches was interrupted and that led to the sudden halt of the train inside the tunnel between the Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations.
The lights in the coaches went off and even the air conditioning stopped working after the train stopped. Many passengers started feeling claustrophobic and some even stepped on to the tracks, leading to chaos in rescue operations.
The DMRC has roped in engineers of the rolling stock and signalling department into action to assist the enquiry committee to ascertain the reason behind the problem, officials said.
“We are gathering data from the departments concerned and are thoroughly examining all possible angles,” a DMRC officer said.
The train, carrying 1,791 passengers and heading towards Gurgaon, suddenly came to a halt at 9.24am on Tuesday and remained stranded till around 11am. Many passengers alleged there was a complete lack of planning in the rescue and evacuate operation. Since the train was packed due to morning rush, passengers got claustrophobic and panicked.
