In the heart of the Capital lies perhaps the best as well as the most-underutilised parking lot of the city.

Capitol Point on Baba Kharak Singh Marg is dubbed as India’s biggest fully automated multi-level car parking system with 1,408 car slots. However, even on the busiest of days, there are at most 500 cars parked here in the swanky eight-floor structure.

“Traffic is maximum on Tuesday and Saturday. About 500 cars come in on these days,” said a parking attendant, who refused to divulge his name.

As soon as one enters the lot, an attendant at a window hands over a smart card.

Then there are separate parking bays, where individual attendants park your car on a ramp. After that you watch as your car rises up in one of the 12 lifts. The whole process is over in five minutes.

When you return to pick your vehicle, you key in the car number and a window shows you its status and the amount to be paid. In minutes, your car comes down and the attendant gets it for you. Another five minutes and you are out.

So why do motorists still prefer congested surface level lots?

“People prefer keeping their cars in normal lots or even on the side of the road because it seems convenient. If there was an integrated facility, then more people would get the advantage of this facility. This technology can resolve the problem of the lack of parking space to a large extent,” said Rakesh Singh, a 30-year-old businessman from Vasant Kunj.
