As the city zone engineers of the North corporation on Wednesday sat in protest against one of their colleagues being harassed by MLA Shoaib Iqbal, his son councillor Aale Mohammad and two other city zone councillors Irfan and Rakesh Kumar, Shagufta Parveen, the resident of Daryaganj whose illegal construction was being demolished, met North civic body chairman demanding justice.
She has also filed a police complaint. She has alleged that the junior engineer MC Meena had asked for bribe and also hinted at sexual favours. According to a senior Delhi Police official, a complaint has been received. "We are investigating the matter," he said.
According to a senior engineer of the corporation, Meena on Monday had gone with police protection to take action on an illegal construction at Darya Ganj. "There was resistance by the locals. However, a huge mob of around 40 people came to the city zone office in the evening and assaulted the JE and misbehaved with other officials," AP Khan, secretary of the junior engineers' body," he said.
Reacting to the police complaint by the Daryaganj resident, a senior engineer of the corporation said, "They are trying to divert issues with false allegations."
According to him, City, SP and Shahadara North zones under the North corporation are very difficult areas to work in as civic officials. "People raise new construction on old structures. If an earthquake comes for more than a few seconds, these three zones are under huge threat," the official said.
The agitating engineers met commissioner PK Gupta, who assured them that he will take up the matter with the police authorities. "The enginners have withdrawn their protest. The commissioner has also informed them that from now all action against illegal constructions will be taken jointly by the headquarters along with zonal offices," an official said.
