The Delhi Police have decided to map the places where rape incidents have taken place. They have started analysing the category of colonies, as defined by the municipal corporations of Delhi (MCD), where several rape incidents have taken place.
So far, the analysis has revealed that over 80% of rapes took place in colonies falling under the F and G (lower middle-class) categories of the civic agencies.
For instance, the area under the jurisdiction of Vasant Kunj police station figures in the top five areas, but detailed analysis has revealed that all the rapes took place in slum clusters and those areas fall under South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s G category.
This year till April 30, 583 cases of rapes were registered against 215 cases last year during the same period. Out of the 583 cases, over 400 cases took place in colonies categorised as F and G.
The municipal corporations have divided the colonies of Delhi into eight categories on the basis of property tax collection. The objective of the police’s analysis is to identify the areas and profile of the colonies where most of the rape cases took place.
After their identification, the police intend to start a special drive to discourage crimes against women. This will entail holding counselling sessions, working closely with minors and keeping an eye out for trouble.
“To curb the increasing incidents of rape, it is important to understand the area where these incidents take place. Also the profile of the accused is the key. Most of the accused are between 18-35 years. Last year too, of the 661 victims, 390 were residents of slum clusters and belonged to lower classes and 270 were from middle-class families,” said a senior police official, requesting anonymity.
The analysis of arrested persons has revealed that over 30 per cent of the rape accused were the neighbours of the victim while 25 per cent were friends. Also over 90 per cent of the rapes occurred inside homes, something which cannot be prevented by the police.
Last year, neighbours were the accused in 202 cases while in 170 cases, the accused were relatives or friends. According to police, many of those accused of rapes included the victims’ father, step-father, ex-husband, uncle, landlords and employers.
