Rachna Karma, a senior citizen and a widow, has been living a quiet life in Sector D-1 of Vasant Kunj since its inception 24 years ago. But not anymore. On February 7, telephone cables in the neighbourhood were damaged in the ongoing widening of a road in the south Delhi locality.
“I did shopping mostly on the telephone. The huge machines, digging the road, have ripped out the telephone cables. My phone is dead now. Even a personal visit to the telephone exchange has not restored my line. I am unable to use a cell phone because the numbers are too small for me to read. Even electricity and water pipes have not been spared and have broken several times,” she said.
She’s not alone. There are many who have been suffering ever since the widening of a 3.5km stretch from Andheria Morh towards Mahipalpur began in a most unplanned and non-transparent manner, felling trees and demolishing colony boundaries.
Jagdish Oberoi, a resident of the same sector, said, “From Andheria Morh to Mahipalpur, the length of the stretch is about 10km that residents take to reach the airport. There are traffic jams at the signals of Sectors D-1, D-2 and Mahipalpur. I want to ask the government how widening only on a stretch of 3.5km from Andheria Morh to Masoodpur will solve the problem.”
“No studies have been done for the widening. Clean Delhi and Green Delhi is a mere slogan for the government,” he said.
“The Delhi government should tell the public works department to stop wok immediately and take people on board before resumption. A high-level enquiry needs to be initiated to know how environmental and civic norms were violated,” said Rajiv Makin of Sector D-2.
“This is just another case of utterly poor planning and trying to implement a project with no justification. A total waste of tax payers’ money,” said Hardip Wirk. But there are some who want the project to be expedited.
“I have a flat in Sector D-6 and am totally looking forward to the widening of this road. The traffic has increased manifold in the past few years,” said Parul Taluja.
