Robber shoots man on busy road to Noida

A man carrying lakhs in an autorickshaw, an armed robber on a motorcycle, and a death. All on the busy road connecting Delhi and Noida around 3.30 pm on Wednesday.

Minutes before his death Santosh had withdrawn Rs 8.65 lakh from a bank in Noida. The police said the accused, identified as Anil, followed Santosh from the bank, shot him and tried to flee with the booty.

But bystanders caught Anil. Suresh Kumar, an eyewitness, said, “I saw a mob beating a man. The crowd managed to get hold of the revolver and the bag containing the money.” Later, the police arrested Anil and recorded the statements of two men who claimed to have caught him.

Eyewitnesses said Anil fired at least three bullets. Ajay Chaudhary, deputy commissioner of police (east), said, “At least two bullets were fired at the victim before he fell of the autorickshaw. We are trying to locate the autorickshaw driver and question him.”

Santosh's body was left on the road for about 45 minutes, causing a traffic jam all along the Delhi-Noida road. Manish Jain, another eyewitness, said, “There was a lot of commotion when people started beating the robber. The body was left uncovered till the police reached after about 25 minutes.”

The police said it appeared to be a well-planned crime, and did not rule out the possibility of the involvement of more people.

Santosh worked with a chartered accountant in the Laxmi Nagar area of east Delhi. The police said Anil was from Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, and owned an phone booth in Noida.
