The BJP students’ wing ABVP on Saturday handed a crushing defeat to Congress’ NSUI in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls, winning three out of four top posts.

The polling was done on the day the BJP announced Modi as its PM candidate and the Delhi BJP quickly attributed the victory to ‘Modi magic’ and as a sign of things to come.

This wave of change will rise from Delhi University to reach the state assembly and then the entire country, said Vijay Goel, Delhi BJP president.

Associate professor at school of social science in JNU, Vivek Kumar said the Modi phenomena was evident right from when he delivered a lecture at Shri Ram College of Commerce. Delhi youth and the public want change and anti-incumbency is going to play a major role, he added.

But Congress dismissed the victory as a prelude to more BJP wins. If that was true, the BJP should be ready to pack up from Gujarat and Punjab as NSUI recently won college elections there, party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.

Commenting on the disappointing 43.6% voter turnout in the elections, political analyst at JNU Anand Kumar said: “The voting was very low and this is a warning signal for the students’ organisation as the youth is not connecting with them. However, ABVP’s win can also be seen as an approval of Narendra Modi.”
