A 53-year-old security guard, who had chosen to live under an assumed identity for close to two decades to gain his businessman employer's trust before robbing him of several lakhs, was arrested by the crime branch, police said on Tuesday.

Identified as Hemant Choudhary who hails from Bihar's Begusarai, the accused, under the alias of SK Tiwari, had kept his identity concealed for 17 long years only to betray the faith of his employer on January 7. He escaped with Rs. 27.95 lakh in cash, said SBS Tyagi, deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways).

"On January 9, a New Delhi-based businessman lodged a complaint alleging that someone had stolen Rs. 27.95 lakh in cash from inside the boot of a car, which was parked inside his house," said DCP Tyagi.

According to the victim, his security guard SK Tiwari was missing since the day of the incident. Investigation revealed that Tiwari's real name was Hemant Choudhary and that he had been working under an assumed name all along.

According to the police, a specially-constituted team was sent to conduct raids across locations at Bihar' Darbhanga, Muzzafarpur and Bhagalpur to apprehend Choudhary who kept shuttling between hideouts.

"On January 11, on a specific input, Choudhary was nabbed from the Anand Vihar ISBT, minutes before he was due to board a bus for Bihar and Rs. 8.50 lakh were recovered from his possession," DCP Tyagi said.

According to police sources, Choudhary was subjected to intensive interrogation.
