In an alarming trend, there has been an exponential rise in the seizure of arms and ammunitions in Metro stations from commuters.

Since 2011, the Central Industrial Security Force, in charge of Metro security, has recovered as many as 15 firearms and 235 rounds of live cartridges.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is highly concerned about the rise in the seizure of firearms and ammunitions. In 2008, only one case was reported while the next year the number went up to seven.

“The steep rise in the seizure of arms and ammunitions is indeed alarming,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson. He, however, said that CISF men are well-prepared for any such exigency.

Udayan Banerjee, DIG, CISF, said, “The sharp rise in seizure of firearms indicates efficiency of our men deployed in Metro system across Delhi.”

In 2011, in 38 cases a total of 97 rounds and seven firearms were recovered from commuters.

Last year, 42 such cases were reported during which 111 live cartridges and seven firearms were seized. This year, six such seizures took place, in which 27 rounds and one firearm were seized, said CISF officials.

The seizures were made during physical frisking of commuters as well as scanning of baggage by the baggage scanners, they added.

“The last seizure was made on February 21 in which 8mm rounds were seized,” said Banerjee. Women commuters have also been caught for carrying arms and ammunition. Last year, a woman was intercepted with ammunition in Noida.

At present, about 5,000 CISF personnel guard the Delhi Metro. Of them 800 are women personnel. Sources said, men are better checked than women due to shortage of staff.

To address this problem, the CISF has decided to raise number of women personnel to 25% of total deployment, said a senior CISF official.
