A 30-year-old teacher employed at a primary girls' school run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near southeast Delhi's Greater Kailash was arrested on Friday evening.
He had been allegedly molesting half a dozen of his students over several months.
Identified as Pradeep Kumar, the accused teacher was a contractual employee of the said school, which is registered at Amar Colony but was currently functioning at a building in the Zamrudpur area since 2010.
"Kumar had been molesting around six to seven of his young students within the school premises for at least six months. He also used to physically assault and verbally threaten them to keep them from exposing the exploitation he subjected them to," said an officer.
According to police, one of his victims blew the lid off his sinister act when she approached the school's principal with a verbal complaint against him on Thursday.
Six of her schoolmates, most of who were found to be aged between 11 and 13 years, followed her lead and made similar complaints against Kumar subsequently.
It left the principal with no alternative but to report the matter to the local police.
"Kumar, according to the written complaint made against him by the students, used to lure them to a non-descript corner of the school where he would then proceed to molest them," said an officer.
"If he encountered any resistance, he would have no qualms about resorting to physical violence. He had assaulted some of his victims on a couple of occasions."
Police said a case was registered immediately after the victims, accompanied by their parents, approached the Greater Kailash police station. Kumar was arrested from his residence in Rohini on Friday night.
Subsequent to his arrest, Kumar was produced at the Saket court on Saturday and sent to judicial custody.
An ordinance promulgated by the Union Cabinet on Friday night proposes to enhance punishment for crimes against women such as stalking, voyeurism, acid attacks and indecent gestures.
