Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday launched the facility of online recharge of Metro smart cards through Internet at its Barakhamba Metro station.
After topping up their smart cards online, commuters will have to validate their cards at one of the 13 metro stations (see box) by placing the card on the ticket reader-cum-add value machines installed there.
The machines, all touch screen-based devices, apart from validating the cards will also provide information about the value of the smart cards, the last recharge information as well as the last five entry-exit transactions on the cards.
“This online and cashless facility is a commuter-friendly initiative and would encourage more Metro commuters to use smart cards,” said Mangu Singh, chief of DMRC. He said that presently 70% of the 2.1 million daily Metro commuters used smart cards. Smartphone users also can use their mobile phones to recharge their Metro cards, said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson. DMRC is also in the process of introducing internet banking facilities for topping up Smart cards. Once this arrangement is in place, the topped up smart cards need not to be validated, said DMRC officials.
Approximately, 17,000 smart cards are sold every day from the various stations of the network.
