Two persons were killed and two others were critically injured when their speeding Maruti Swift car rammed a tree at central Delhi's Shadipur area on Monday morning.
According to police, the accident took place around 2 am and the victims — three of them were from Punjab — were returning after attending the wedding of their friend at Inderpuri in west Delhi.
The deceased were identified as Raj Singh Dhillon, 27, from Amritsar in Punjab and Akshat Goyal, 22, a resident of Paharganj in Delhi. Suchchain Singh, 30, and Rose Ismail, 19, both from Punjab, sustained multiple injuries in the accident. They are undergoing treatment at different private hospitals in Delhi, said police.
A senior police officer said the accident came to light when a passerby made a call to the police control room.
A police team reached the spot and found the car in badly damaged condition.
"The four occupants of the car could not be rescued manually because they were trapped inside. Teams from the Delhi Fire department and disaster management cut the vehicle with gas cutters and rescued the victims," said the senior officer.
Dillon, who was sitting next to the driver on the front seat, was pronounced dead by the doctors while Goyal died during treatment.
Prima facie, the officer said, it appeared that Goyal, who was driving the car, lost control over the vehicle and rammed straight into the tree.
A case in connection was registered at the Ranjeet Nagar police station and the family members of the victims were informed.
