Former Union minister Jaswant Singh is likely to be the NDA candidate for the vice-presidential election if senior BJP leaders fail to persuade NDA convenor Sharad Yadav to contest as the Opposition alliance's nominee.

The National Democratic Alliance leaders are to meet at senior BJP leader LK Advani’s residence here on Monday morning to finalise the name to challenge UPA candidate vice-president Hamid Ansari in the August 7 polls.

Source said Yadav is not keen on contesting though BJP leaders have been urging him to take on Ansari.

The senior Janata Dal (United) leader on Sunday downplayed reports about the NDA considering his candidature, saying he would not like to comment on “speculation” and “unfortunately, my name has also been surfaced”.

But Yadav indicated that his party, which decided to back UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee in the July 19 presidential poll, would stick with the BJP on the vice-presidential election.

“The issue of the vice-presidential election and Pranab Mukherjee are separate. I have never supported the Congress' political line since I joined politics. We have supported Mukherjee for his political experience only,” Yadav said.

Similarly, the Shiv Sena, which has decided to back Mukherjee, said it would support the NDA nominee for the post of vice-president though the numbers are loaded in Ansari’s favour.
