This 6’3” tall, well-built actor had a debacle for a debut. Playing the role of Jai in Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag did nothing to Prashant Raj’s career; if anything, it axed his wings, consigned him to oblivion and forced him into a self-imposed hibernation. Two years later, the man has resurfaced to give Bollywood another shot with his new movie Toss. A thriller, the movie stars Prashant along with an ensemble cast and is set to release next month.

A Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) discovery, Prashant landed the role in Aag “by a chance of destiny,” when an assistant director to RGV, who happened to be Prashant’s friend, passed on his photographs to Ram Gopal. But destiny played a cruel joke when Aag was declared the biggest flop of not just the year (2007) but of decades.

“Something went wrong with the film. A lot of people were disappointed. I was, too. When I individually looked at my scenes, they all looked all right. I was so looking forward to the film.” Ask him if the movie’s catastrophic response left him with bitter feelings for his mentor and he replies with a firm “no.”

“He is a fabulous guy and I’d love to work with him. I share a good rapport with him.” Then why hasn’t the mentor offered him another film? “I am sure he has me in mind. After Aag was released, he indicated he wants to work with me. He’s just busy with some other projects right now.”

An ex-runway model, Prashant did think of going back to modelling after Aag’s debacle, but soon realised that “acting is my calling and I’d rather wait.”

On his wish list are directors like “Madhur Bhandarkar and Anurag Kashyap” and co-stars like “Sonam Kapoor and Genelia D’Souza”.
