• Bridges were the most spectacular of Railway Engineering and architecture on Indian Railways a century ago and it continues to be at the close of this millenium.

• Annual budget of Indian Railways for Rebuliding/rehabilitations is of the order of Rs.800 million. First pre stressed concrete (PRC) bridge in India was built in 1948 for Assam Rail link Project near Siliguri.
• Indian Railways have been the pioneers in constructions of long span bridges. Rail-cum-road on river Yamuna near Delhi was built in 1864. In the late 1950s river Ganga was bridged at Mokameh and River Bramhaputra Pandu. The longest railway bridge on Indian Railways is on river Sone at Dehri and consists of 93 spans of 30.5 m each.
• A bridge consisting of 18 spans of 120m each and 2 spans of 30.5 m each is being constructed over river Bramhaputra at Joghighopa in Assam. This will be longest span bridge on Indian Railways in coming years.
