A German cannibal jailed for killing and eating a willing victim, is considering a series of movie and book offers, said his lawyer.

However, heart-throb British actor Hugh Grant has not so far signalled any desire for the lead role despite his reported interest, the lawyer added.

Armin Meiwes, 42, was jailed for eight and a half years for the manslaughter of an engineer he had met over the Internet, but was cleared of murder after the court heard his victim had been seeking "the ultimate kick."

The case fascinated and appalled Germany, and his lawyer Harald Ermel said during the trial that there had been interest in a movie and a book.

Ermel said that for the time being, he was only collecting inquiries about book and film rights, but stressed that no decision had been taken.

He said there had been a lot of interest in securing interviews, books and films with Meiwes which he was gathering in his office.

"My client doesn't even know about many of the inquiries," he added.

Ermel said Grant, who was reported by a British tabloid daily as interested in playing the lead role opposite Brad Pitt as his victim, had not approached him.

He said he and Meiwes had wanted to wait for Friday's verdict before making a decision. Among the inquiries from respectable studios and production firms were also many from people just wanting to make a quick buck, he added.

Meiwes has said he wants to write his memoirs in jail in order to persuade other people with similar cannibalistic leanings to seek help before it is too late.

The computer technician from Rotenburg, central Germany, admitted killing, dissecting and partially eating his victim, a 43-year-old Berlin engineer, in March 2001 after advertising on the Internet.
