Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, who came back to Srinagar from New Delhi following the news of hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, on Saturday appealed to people of the state to maintain peace and calm.

"We have imposed curfew after our assement of the situation. Restrictions have imposed but the army has not called. The situation is being handled by Jammu and Kashmir Police as well as the paramilitary forces," Abdullah said.

The chief minister said that he has issued orders to paramilitary forces and police to deal with the situation with 'utmost restrain'.

The chief minister said that he along with the top officials in his administration were informed of the decision to hang Guru at 8pm on Friday, around 12 hours before the hanging.

"We were informed about the situation about 8'o clock in the evening and told that the decision has been made after following all legal procedure," he added.

Abdullah made it clear that unlike the Maqbool Bhat case, who was hanged to death in Tihar jail on February 11 in 1983 after he was held guilty of killing bank manger in border district of Kupwara in bank robbery case, in Guru's case state government had no role to play.

"I want to make it clear that unlike in the Maqbool Bhat case the state was no required to sign any death warrant as there was no case against him in the state," said Abdullah.

Abdullah also appealed to the people of state to not 'let the situation to go out of hand".

"I understand there is certain degree of angst and there are some people who would like to take advantage of the situation," said the chief minister.

"I appeal to the people to allow us to get through this people with peace and not to restore to violent protests," he added.

Abdullah also urged the media to verify facts before reporting about Guru's hanging.
