A twin bomb blast killed a migrant worker from Punjab and injured six others in Manipur's Thoubal district Wednesday night.

A Thoubal district police officer said suspected militants detonated two powerful bombs around 11 pm at Pallel Lamkhai, barely 500 metres from the Pallel police station. The bombs were targeted at shacks where migrant workers of a private construction project were sleeping.

"The man who died on the spot was identified as Lalit Kumar from Ambala. The injured are all from Silchar (Assam)," the officer said, adding they were taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal in serious conditions.

Manipuri militants had two months ago carried out a similar attack in Imphal, killing nine migrant workers and injuring 11 others sleeping in a shack.

Wednesday's twin blast was the 122nd such incident in Manipur since January this year. Records available with the state police say 121 cases of bomb blasts and bomb threats were reported till October 30. There were 46 IED blasts, 29 IED recovered, 25 grenade attacks, 64 grenades recovered and three cases of recovery of highly explosive materials.

The blasts have till date claimed 27 lives and injured 77 persons.

In October alone, there were seven IED blasts and two grenade attacks while an IED and four hand grenades were recovered. Most of the blasts were targeted at non-Manipuris, who local militants want driven out of Manipur.

Manipur, a state of 2.6 million people, has some 30 active militant outfits. The total cadre strength of these groups is believed to be 5,000.

"The frequency of the blasts and bomb recoveries underscores the way the Manipur government has handled the law and order situation," said a rights group named Women Action for Development in a statement.
