Two men charged in connection with the murder of 19-year-old model, actress and university student, Maple Batalia, have been ordered to stand trial in BC Supreme Court.

Gurjinder (Gary) Dhaliwal and Gursimar Bedi appeared in BC provincial court on Monday in Surrey for the decision, which came at the end of a preliminary inquiry.

Dhaliwal is charged with first-degree murder, while Bedi is charged with manslaughter with a firearm and being an accessory after the fact.

The evidence presented at the preliminary inquiry is subject to a publication ban.

Batalia was shot around 1 am on September 28, 2011 as she walked to her car after leaving Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus, where she was studying health sciences. She was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, but she succumbed to injuries.

Dhaliwal, Batalia’s ex-boyfriend, and Bedi were arrested and charged in December 2012. Dhaliwal remains in custody, while Bedi was granted bail in January 2013.

The men are scheduled to appear in court in New Westminster on April 17.
