The former Pakistan cricket captain on his new moves.. interviewed by Bidisha Singha
What made you judge a dance competition?
(Laughs) I know I’m not a dancer to be doing this but I won’t be judging them on their dancing skills. Sushmita (Sen) is there for that.
I’ll be only gauging the mental state of the cricketers.. how they behave in an environment which is not their usual playing field.
That’s your reason for taking up Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina?
See, the show involves cricketers.. players whom I’ve played against. Harbhajan (Singh), Vinod (Kambli), Nikhil (Chopra). (Smiles) I can give inputs to Sushmita regarding all that.
I thought you’d say you’re a closet dancer, that’s why.
I’m 43.. my dancing days are over.
Does that mean you were a dancer?
Naah.. my moves were confined to the nightclubs.
Sushmita and you seem to have opened a mutual admiration club of sorts.
(Laughs) Yeah. We get along very well. I have always been a fan of hers.
So, has she offered you any films?
Not really. I won’t get into films unless it’s something rather exceptional.
So what now.. cricket coaching?
I don’t have the patience to be a coach. Besides other skills needed for it, which I don’t have.
What about helping out the Pakistan Cricket Board? It’s in a mess after the chairman, Nasim Ashraf, resigned.
I’d love to help but they should ask for it. We’re all ready to help.. Imran (Khan), Waqar (Younis), Inzamam (Ul Haq).. all of us.
Only the PCB is not enough.. we also need to have a cricket committee like the Indian board has. But what can you expect from a board which doesn’t even have a chairman?
The PCB has decided to organise their home ODIs at Dubai. What’s your take?
It’s fine as a stop-gap arrangement, but not for long.
Pakistan has always been known for its pool of cricketing talent. But of late no big name has come up..
There’s no dearth of talent in Pakistan. The only problem is that it has not been channelised well.
Any other Wasim Akram in the making?
(Smiles) There can only be one Wasim or one Sachin (Tendulkar). But yes, there are several bowlers who have impressed me. Ishant Sharma is one such guy.
What about your sons?
Oh, they are not interested in cricket. They are more into soccer.
