America and Iran may not share a cozy platform in a majority of global fora, but Hollywood actress and political activist Susan Sarandon (of Dead Man Walking fame) and Oscar nominated Iranian film-maker Majid Majidi will come together to exchange ideas on pressing global issues and the role of cinema at the 44th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on November 20 in Goa.

IFFI, India’s state-run flagship film festival, has a breath-taking line-up this year for cinema aficionados, bringing some widely anticipated films to India, including a near-simultaneous release for Justin Chadwick’s Mandela: Long walk to Freedom.

“IFFI 2013 promises to be this year’s most important dialogue on cinema, through its finely curated selection,” information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said.

Sarandon, well known both for her films and political activism, will attend the festival along with Majidi, who has successfully showcased Iran’s cinematic prowess to the world and was nominated for an Academy award for his Children of Heaven (1997).

IFFI, which has an international prize worth `1.1 crore, with 15 films vying for it, will also feature Bollywood actress Rekha.

The festival opens with “The Don Juans”, the 2013 Oscar-nominated Czech comedy film by Jiri Mezal.
