With a view to improve coastal security mechanism along the 1600 km-long coastline of Gujarat, the Indian Coast Guard has set up a new regional headquarters for North West region, defence spokesperson said in Gandhinagar on Thursday. The headquarters will exercise overall administrative
and operational control over Coast Guard units based at various ports in Gujarat besides developing synergy with other stake holders in our maritime domain, he added.

The spokesperson said that the headquarters will work in tandem with the Central and state government agencies in achieving prime national agenda coastal and seaward security besides, undertaking other mandated duties of Coast Guard with ships, aircraft, hovercraft and other sea going assets based at various ports in the state.

The regional headquarters activated on Tuesday is temporarily based in Sector 11 in Gandhinagar till it develops its own infrastructure, he said.

Inspector General S P Sharma has been appointed as the first Regional Commander, the spokesperson added.
