India triumph 2-1 in Sultan of Johor Cup opener

Johor Bahru (Malaysia):  India started their campaign in the Sultan of Johor Cup U-21 hockey tournament on a perfect note, defeating England 2-1 in their opening round-robin match here on Sunday.

India scored a goal each, both from field efforts, in both halves to pocket three points. Ramandeep Singh gave India the lead in the 18th minute before Talwinder Singh doubled the lead for his side in the 50th. Sam French pulled one back for the Englishmen, converting a penalty corner in the 67th.

China victorious
Kuala Lumpur: India fought valiantly against China before going down by a solitary goal in their second Pool A match of the eighth Women’s Asia Cup hockey meet on Sunday. India, ranked 12th in the world, fought tooth and nail against the seventh ranked Chinese, but it was Wang Meng Yu who finally broke the deadlock when she converted a penalty in the 50th minute.

India finish second
New Delhi: India finished second in the first Asian School Track and Field Championships in Kuantan, Malaysia with an impressive medal tally of 29. India won 12 gold, 11 silver and six bronze and finished second behind hosts Malaysia (12 gold, 14 silver, 10 bronze).

Sindhu top draw
New Delhi: Saina Nehwal won’t be seen inaction but some of India’s other top shuttlers such as P V Sindhu and P Kashyap will fight it out for the top prize in the 35th PSPB Inter-Unit Badminton tournament beginning at Siri Fort from Monday.

Other top players competing in the event are Ashwini Ponappa, Jwala Gutta, V Diju, Gurusai Dutt, K Srikanth and Ajay Jayaram among others.

Grover, Gujrathi 3rd
Kocaeli (Turkey):  GM Sahaj Groverfailed to capitalise on his chances and played out a draw with Iranian Pouya Idani, while Vidit Gujrathi defeated Polish Marcel Kanarek to be jointly third after the eighth round of the World Junior Chess Championship here.
