The timing of the VHP’s Ayodhya yatra clearly suggests that it was an attempt to polarise the electorate along communal lines before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

With reference to the report India lacks leadership direction: Ratan Tata (August 29), it is shocking that a prominent industrialist like Ratan Tata is quoted as saying that “India has lost the confidence of the world”.

With reference to the editorial Look before you leap (August 29), it seems that the US has not learnt any lessons from the past. Looking at its past record of military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan, it would be imprudent of the US to launch a strike on Syria that could draw the latter into a civil war.

The devaluation of the rupee resulted in an increase in the costs of oil imports. As the price of oil and transport went up, eventually the price of all essential commodities shot up. It is high time the government took measures to arrest the rupee’s free fall.

Asaram is trying to vilify the girl and her family to neutralise charges levelled against him. If the godman considers himself innocent, he should have presented himself to the police by now.

Bharati Chaturvedi’s article Bangladesh nod to Bt brinjal, India at risk (August 26) comes out as an opinion piece aimed at inculcating unjustified fears with her one-sided ideological views that are not based on scientific evidence rooted in plant biotechnology.

With reference to It’s time to face Gujarat’s past (Our Take, September 3), the initiatives taken by the BJP to reach out to the Muslim community in order to get their electoral support in 2014 are welcome.

With reference to Sitaram Yechury’s article Dressed up as divinity (Left Hand Drive, September 3), it is appalling that in India people confuse religion with blind faith.

The Supreme Court is right in not reviewing its judgment that an MP or MLA convicted of a criminal offence attracting a punishment of two years and above will be disqualified.

With reference to the editorial Few encounters with the truth (Our Take, September 5), jailed DIG DG Vanzara’s scathing letter that blamed the Modi government for encounter killings by the Gujarat Police seems to be politically motivated.

Vox pop

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's assurance to the people of the state that he would serve them till 2017 was made to look like as an attempt to downplay his prime ministerial aspirations.

With regard to the report Manmohan wants Rahul for PM (September 8), it is sad to see the way the prime minister is cajoling a reluctant Rahul Gandhi every now and then to take on a bigger role in the government.

Vox pop

It is appalling that Akhilesh Yadav, who became the youngest chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and was hailed as the changing face of the UP politics, has failed to keep in check the worsening communal violence in the state.

Vox pop

If one cares for the country, one should have the courage to speak his/her mind and if the anti-defection law is hampering informed debate in Parliament, it is time the law is amended.

If a woman commits suicide due to her husband's extra-marital affair, the man cannot be held criminally liable for subjecting her to cruelty, unless it is proved that there was a wilful conduct on his part to drive her to take the extreme step.
